Join Us for a Hands-On Learning Experience with Renowned Soil Scientist
Thomsons Catchment Project is pleased to announce a practical learning day focused on soil management for local farmers. The event will take place on Wednesday 26 June 2024, from 11am to 2.30pm, starting at the Omakau Golf Club.
Farmers in the Manuherekia Valley are invited to dig deep into the secrets of their soil at an engaging, hands-on field day designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to manage the unique soils of the Manuherekia Valley effectively through winter and spring.
This field day offers a fantastic opportunity to gain invaluable insights from Professor Jim Moir, a leading soil scientist from Lincoln University. Professor Moir is dedicated to helping farmers enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of their grassland farming systems. He will share his expertise on the unique characteristics of Manuherekia soils and offer practical advice on sustainable soil management tailored to local conditions.
What to Expect
Engaging Indoor Session: Discover the specific types of soils found in the Thomsons catchment and Manuherekia Valley. Learn what makes these soils special and different from those in other regions like Canterbury, Southland, or coastal Otago.
Interactive Field Visits: Participants will explore soils on two intensive farms in the catchment. This hands-on experience will provide insights into how these soils behave under production, irrigation, and dryland farming.
Practical Management Tips: Learn how to achieve top production from these soils while maintaining their health for the long term. Discover best practices to minimise losses to waterways and wind erosion.
Hands-On Demonstrations: Attendees will see how to perform a Visual Soil Assessment (VSA) and other monitoring techniques to ensure soil health and productivity.
